CHAPTER 16
The day went by smoothly, and Jane found herself finishing up earlier than sheâd expected. The clients she still had in Alma were some of her favorites, probably because she knew she was so close to home. It felt much better knowing home was a short drive away versus the longer drive home from the city. She was walking to her car when her phone began to ring. She unlocked her car as she answered.
âJane, this is Marissa Clarke. We spoke this morning?â
âYes,â Jane said, recalling. âThank you so much for getting back with me.â
âOf course.â Jane could practically hear Marissa beaming through the phone.
âIâm in Alma now. Where would be a good place for us to meet?â
âHow about at the diner? We can have a cup of coffee or something while we talk. I could meet you there in ten minutes.â
Sheâd considered inviting Marissa to her house, but she wasnât sure how clean the place had been when sheâd left that morning. It wasnât as though sheâd been expecting to have guests. Besides, she could really go for some caffeine right then.
âSounds perfect,â Marissa replied.
Jane started her car and headed for the local diner. It wasnât far from where sheâd been working, so Jane managed to get there first. She asked for a booth in the corner so they could have some semblance of privacy and just as she was sliding into the booth, Marissa arrived.
She was wearing a slim skirt with a matching blazer. Her red lips stood out from her pale skin and dark hair. They exchanged pleasantries and gave the waitress their drink order before they waited to be left alone.
âSo, did you get one of the offers from A.E. Miller?â Marissa asked politely as they got to the point.
âNot exactly,â Jane answered, skirting the truth for a moment. She didnât want to spook the woman with her direct questions. She probably thought she was here to confirm a sale. Sheâd be disappointed when she realized that wasnât happening. âBut Iâve heard about the offers and asked a person who was given one. They directed me to you.â
Marissa beamed. âExcellent.â
Jane decided to approach the subject of Victor carefully. âI heard the guy whoâd been making the deals had passed. Did he have an accident or something?â Jane tried to word it in a way that made it sound like sheâd heard the information from the rumor mill in town.
âYes, unfortunately, he passed. As I understand it the police are looking into it,â Marissa said as she pursed her lips. Their drinks came then, and they fell quiet after theyâd thanked the waitress. When she left, Marissa blew on her mug before taking a tentative sip. âIâll be taking over his position here.â
âIsnât it true that you were working with him in the beginning?â Jane asked.
Marissa nodded, but somehow her dark hair didnât move. Jane wondered if it was from too much hairspray or some other product. âThatâs right.â
âSo why did you leave?â Jane asked, pretending she wasnât prying, just curious.
